Femme de Courage Extraordinaire

​

This exhibition celebrates the healing narratives of some of the world’s bravest young women, faced with challenges and adversity, yet determined to make a difference. Maria Medina-Schechter, an artist with over 20 years’ experience, became inspired to create this body of work after having been grievously injured in an auto accident in 2018. After several surgeries, she was left permanently disabled. After enduring additional surgeries, years of physical therapy, and sheer perseverance, she was able to create these works, which are her first since becoming an artist with a disability. This project was made possible in part by the California Arts Council, A State Agency, and The National Arts and Disability Center at the University of California Los Angeles, UCLA, as well as a grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation.  Findings, opinions, or conclusions contained herein are not necessarily those of The California Arts Council, The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Arts and Disability Center, and Sacramento County.
